Fight Club: Book Cover Redesign

Project Description

The assignment was to be able to design a book sleeve for one of four given books. For this project I chose Fight Club as my book and set out to design the sleeve with little prior knowledge about the plot or themes. I did research to gain a better understanding and read summaries and watched the movie. For the design I choose a silhouette of a face that represents the main character. The facial silhouette is made from hues and shades of red and blue to represent themes of violence and hype masculinity throughout the book. The image was also used again for the back cover to create a cohesive look with the front. A three dimensional aspect was also added to the cover in the form of another flap layered on top with a silhouette of greater detail. The flap was printed on vellum and meant to show the multiple personalities possessed by the main character as well as displaying a theme of perception of one's personality by society versus how they see themselves. Another aspect of the design that aligns with the theme of the book is the text. The text is handwritten letters combined with a soft, bold text. Also, for this project was an inclusion of a logo for a made up publishing company. My company was bluebird designs. The logo was made with a silhouette of a blue bird that is a simple outline to be able to easily see it from the spine. Underneath the bluebird are the letters BP that are connected by manipulation of the anchor points in the type.
