School of the Arts branding and way finding system

Project Description

The issue being resolved is the lack of clarity when navigating through the arts building. The aim of this project is to aid in navigation of the art and design department of the Fine Arts building. To do this we had to create a logotype, maps of all floors, icon systems, a color pallet, and mockups to show how the way finding system would be applied. To do this we had to select a font and color pallet and assign the color pallet meaning and use the singular font (with multiple variations) in different ways to organize the signage and create the logotype. I choose a color palette of six colors, each one designated to a type of space. The color palette is meant to be bold, vibrant colors that contrast with the drabness of the building and a bright, creative feel that intertwines with art and design disciplines. The type chosen for my project was EllographCF, which was chosen for its fun use of type while still being bold and readable. The type was used for the logotype by decreasing the kerning between letters to create an overlapping effect that was used as a cutout, which was later used as a theme in my icon system as well. The cutouts are meant to relay an overlap of creativity and spaces of disciplines to display a community of the school of the arts. The color palette was then applied to the logotype to showcase the different spaces held within the building. The green, pink, and yellow were applied which represent shared spaces, studios, and offices. Next the type was taken and created into an icon system. For my project the icon system was based on the lowercase letter ‘i’ from my font EllographCF. The icons go along with the detached dot of the I, as well as the overlapping qualities of the logotype, and the thickness of the letter. The icons also follow having a consistent height so they all have a similar consistency when applied to the map and signage. These icons were then applied to the map with the color palette to create an easy to read, straight forward map from a top view similar to a floorplan.
